What Is a Motorcycle?

Whether it’s just a regular old motorcycle or one with all the bells and whistles, motorbikes can be incredibly fun to drive. And that’s why they’re so popular in both poorer countries where they’re a very affordable form of transportation and in rich countries where people use them as a weekend hobby or sport.

A motorcycle is a two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle steered by a handlebar from a saddle-style seat. Its engine is located between the rider and the front wheel or, more rarely, at the rear wheels. Motorcycles are usually powered by internal combustion engines. Some models have electric engines.

It’s important to remember that motorcycles are much lighter than cars or trucks, and their center of gravity is closer to the ground. This can make them more sensitive to steering and a bit more difficult to handle at low speeds. To help compensate, modern motorcycles are often designed with a very sloping frame to lower the bike’s overall weight and shift the center of gravity closer to the rider.

It’s also important for motorcycle riders to be sober and drug free. Alcohol and drugs can impair your judgment, balance, coordination, and throttle control. And even some prescription medications can affect your ability to shift gears and react to what other vehicles or pedestrians are doing.
