What Is a Motorcycle?

motorcycle

Motorcycles are two or three-wheeled motor vehicles steered by a handlebar from a saddle-style seat. Whether you are an experienced rider or just starting out, the right motorcycle can make riding fun and safe. The type of motorcycle you choose depends on your needs and the types of riding you will be doing, including long-distance touring, commuting or cruising. There are also special-purpose motorcycles for off-road and racing. Motorcycling is the activity of riding a motorcycle and participating in related activities such as joining a club and attending rallies.

The basic definition of a motorcycle has recently been revised. This change was made to better define motorcycles for accident reporting purposes. The new definition is found in the Federal Highway Administration’s Guide to Reporting Highway Statistics, and will be used by States when submitting information for FARS.

While the definition is simple, there are many types of motorcycles and related vehicles that fit within the category. For example, there are street and race bikes, off-road bikes and learner or beginner bikes. Each of these has different performance requirements and a specific purpose.

One thing that sets motorcycles apart from cars and trucks is their engine power. The engines are small and compact but can generate very high peak horsepower. The fact that they aren’t enclosed with a passenger compartment and don’t have the drag of a body makes them very efficient at speeds below 60mph, but as speed increases the effort required to overcome air resistance becomes exponentially greater.
