What is a Motorcycle?

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled motorized vehicle for transporting one or more riders. It is usually powered by an internal combustion engine and has a steerable front wheel and connected to the rear with a drive chain. It is often considered to be the first motorized automobile, though there were earlier concepts powered by steam in the 1800s including Michaux-Perreaux’s steam velocipede in Europe and the Roper steam velocipede in Boston, MA.

Motorcycles accelerate quickly – most middleweight and large-bore motorcycles can go from 0-60 in under three seconds. They aren’t very aerodynamic however – the exposed wheels, engine, and rider make them more susceptible to drag than smooth, slick car designs. This doesn’t matter too much at speeds below 60mph but as you increase your speed, it takes four times as much power to maintain your velocity.

The sound a motorcycle makes is also worth describing – it’s long, low, and threatening, and can help ramp up tension in scenes where it appears. It also helps to evoke a sense of power and strength for characters that use it – a motorcycle can be terrifying at high speeds, and the skills of riders who have mastered its control can inspire awe in other characters and readers alike.

Motorcycles produce a lot of hydrocarbons and nitric oxides, so they have to be regulated in order to avoid excessive air pollution. Many governments have a maximum emissions limit for the exhaust, and some also have safety requirements for helmets and protective clothing.
