Motorcycles are a great way to get around and are a lot of fun. However, they come with some unique risks that should make anyone thinking of buying one think twice about getting behind the wheel. Some of the common risk factors are things like low visibility, wet weather, rough roads, and lack of safety features in some vehicles. However, the most important factor for a safe ride is the biker themselves and their ability to handle the vehicle in various conditions.
The word motorcycle (and its synonyms motorbike, motor scooter and moped) can mean different things to different people, but most of the time it conjures up images of speed, danger, and a whole subculture of biking. Whether it’s the rebellious bad boy image or simply that they’re just an incredible form of transportation, there’s no denying that motorcycles are awesome.
There are a huge number of different bikes available on the market, ranging from street-legal dual sport models to off-road adventure bikes. These can be built for on or offroad use and have either a dirt-oriented chassis or more street-oriented suspension depending on the model chosen.
The frame of a motorcycle is usually made from steel tubing or sheet metal and the wheels are typically aluminium or alloy rims with spokes. The rounded, small tires allow the biker to lean while turning which lowers their centre of gravity and helps with traction. The gyroscopic effect created by the rotation of the tires also improves stability.
