Motorcycles – More Than Just Transport

At its simplest, a motorcycle is a motor vehicle with two wheels, steering, a brake (hopefully), and somewhere for the rider to sit. But the motorcycle is more than just a form of transport – it is a way to express individuality, a source of excitement and a passion for life that cannot be found in a car.

Post war engineering and manufacturing techniques meant that factory workers who had once only been soldiers could now buy their own personal transport, opening up a whole new world of speed, adventure and travel. For those with families, simply bolting on a sidecar to the main frame meant the entire family could be transported together in comfort and style.

There are now a huge variety of motorcycles available. Some are built to be a practical form of transport – the scooter design with step-through frame, protective bodywork and automatic engine – while others are designed to provide an adrenaline rush. At one end of the scale, the superbike offers high-tech, race bred performance with incredible power, tyres and brakes allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 in less than three seconds.

However, it is important to remember that, just like other vehicles on the road, motorcycles are vulnerable to a number of safety risks. These include lack of visibility due to their smaller size, and the fact that other drivers can easily overlook them when crossing intersections or changing lanes. Additionally, high speeds can increase the impact of any collision and make it more likely that a rider will be injured or killed.
