Motorcycles are a great way to travel and are a popular choice for many people. With a wide variety of models and styles available, it’s easy to find a bike that suits you.
Construction, Engines and Safety
A motorcycle is a vehicle that has a bicycle frame and a wheel that is driven by an internal combustion engine. It was invented in 1885 by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, who called their invention the “Daimler Reitwagen.”
Typical construction of a modern mass-produced motorcycle includes a steel or aluminium frame, telescopic forks holding the front wheel, and disc brakes. A petrol-powered engine ranging from one to four cylinders is coupled to a manual five- or six-speed transmission, which drives the rear wheel by a chain, driveshaft or belt.
Safety
The most common cause of a motorcycle accident is speeding. Motorcyclists are required by law to have a valid license, liability insurance and other equipment such as a helmet and lights.
Safety is a primary concern for motorcycle riders because they are exposed to road hazards that most passenger cars and trucks do not have. There are a variety of passive and active safety features on most motorcycles, such as automatic traction control systems, always-on headlights and rear view mirrors.
Like driving a car, riding a motorcycle requires technique. Riding a bicycle is very similar to riding a motorcycle, only it’s faster and you need to look where you want to go to avoid hitting things or causing a crash.
