Choosing a Motorcycle

Motorcycles exude an undeniable charm that attracts people of all ages from all over the world. Whether it be the iconic Harley or the old world cruiser, there is something about this two-wheeled machine that appeals to a person’s inner thrill seeker. The motorcycle is a unique form of transportation that allows for a more intimate relationship with the road and can reach places cars cannot (Erickson, 2015).

There are a few things to consider when choosing a bike. First, you must decide what kind of motorcycle you want to ride. The three main types are street, off-road, and dual purpose. Within these categories, there are a wide variety of models to choose from. Street bikes are designed for commuting, touring, and sport (including racing). Off-road and dual purpose motorcycles can be bone simple or extremely high tech.

Engine size is also a major consideration when selecting a motorcycle. The size of the motor is measured in cubic centimeters (CC). The higher the CC, the more power and faster the bike will be.

Most modern motorcycles are powered by four-stroke engines. This type of engine is favored because it produces fewer pollutants than the earlier two-stroke designs. The EPA and some states have set strict emission standards that limit hydrocarbon emissions and nitric oxides from new motorcycles. Before purchasing a bike, it is important to measure the length from your bottom to your groin to make sure you will be able to comfortably fit on it. Also, test drive the bike by straddling it and making sure your feet can easily touch the ground when you stop the vehicle.
