A Beginner’s Guide to Motorcycles

Motorcycles are two wheeled motorized vehicles with a seat or saddle for the rider. They are often used as a recreational vehicle and are also popular for commuting and transport purposes.

DOT defines motorcycles as vehicles that have motive power, are designed to travel with not more than three wheels in contact with the ground and can be powered by an internal combustion engine. Some motorcycles have more than two wheels and are classified as trikes.

Types of Motorcycles

There are many different types of motorcycles on the market, each with their own unique features and design. Some are strictly utilitarian while others are purely aesthetically pleasing.

Some motorcycles are designed for a specific sport and others have been developed specifically for thrill seeking purposes. Regardless of what you’re looking for, there is a bike that’s perfect for you.

Construction

A modern motorcycle typically consists of a steel or aluminium frame with telescopic forks holding the front wheel and disc brakes on the rear. The engine is mounted near the rear of the machine and drives the front wheel via a transmission system, which may have four to six gears.

Safety

A motorcycle is a relatively safe and inexpensive way to get around, but it’s important to take the necessary precautions. Not wearing protective gear, speeding and not paying attention to traffic laws can all lead to serious accidents and injuries.

Motorcycles can be fun to ride, but they do require a certain level of skill and instruction. Taking the time to learn about the rules of the road and practicing your riding skills can make the difference between a comfortable and safe ride and an accident-filled experience.
